At Ozark Prosthodontics, we treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when a person's muscles that surround the airway relax during sleep, causing the walls of the airway to collapse and block the intake of oxygen during sleep. As oxygen levels decrease, the person has to come out of a deep sleep to resume breathing. This is characterized by pauses in breathing called apnea. Typically, if a person is snoring heavily and then suddenly stops, they are experiencing sleep apnea.
Common symptoms of sleep apnea are:
- Fatigue and daytime drowsiness
- Restless sleep
Severe cases of sleep apnea can be life threatening if left untreated.
Sleep apnea has been linked to:
- Heart disease
- Heart arrhythmias
- High blood pressure
- Memory loss
- Accidents caused from sleep deprivation
We perform an array of breathing tests and offer a take-home sleep study for diagnostic purposes. If a patient shows that they might benefit from our sleep apnea therapy, we will give them a mouth appliance that opens the jaw, letting more oxygen through the patient's airway. This appliance should relieve them of sleep disturbances related to breathing disorders.
If you or someone you know may suffer from sleep apnea, please call or email and schedule an appointment with us.
